Out of all your jewelry collection, it’s probably your necklaces that make your head ache when packing for a move or travel. If you want to travel in style without the hassle of having your necklaces turning into one tangled mess, check out these 3 ways to keep your necklaces organized:
Straws
There is a nifty way to prevent your necklaces from tangling–and it’s one of our favorite jewelry-packing tips. Take a plastic drinking straw and feed an unclasped necklace through the center. Then close the clasp once again. Do this for each necklace or bracelet you believe might get tangled with one another. Toilet paper rolls are a great alternative for chunkier necklaces. Source:Rent
Plastic Wrap
Put down a layer of plastic wrap, lay your necklaces out, and then cover with another layer of plastic wrap. Press the two layers together around your necklaces to keep them separated. Gently fold or roll your wrapped necklaces so that they create a small bundle that’s easy to pack in your suitcase.
Less bulky necklaces, like pendants on chains, work best with this method. You can also pack bracelets this way, butbuttons will work best for earrings. While the plastic wrap will provide some protection, if your bundle has any particularly delicate jewelry in it, wrap clothing around the bundle for added padding. Source:Lifehacker
Ziploc Bags
Use the tiny Ziploc bags that extra buttons come in when you buy clothes. They’re great for holding a thin necklace, a pair of earrings or a pendant for a necklace. Source:PearlsofTravelWisdom

As you may have gathered, I’m in Chicago all week adjudicating at the Chicago Amateur Piano Competition. Judging starts today, but this competition offers an impressive events roster (a fairly unique concept amongst competitions), which runs in tandem, therefore proceedings actually started last night.
Fifty-five talented pianists will play a short programme over the next two days with finals taking place on Friday (for the two-round competition) and Saturday morning (for the three-round competition). However, events kicked off last night with a ‘Meet the judges’ interview which was live streamed on Youtube. Russian/American pianist Konstantin Soukhovetski, American pianist and composer, Adam Neiman, and myself (pictured above on stage and ready to go, before the live stream event!) will adjudicate over the next few days and this interview was designed to introduce competitors to their judges and provide an opportunity to ask questions about our lives.
You can watch the whole interview (although sadly, the connection was lost at the beginning so around 10 minutes of the opening has been cut!), by clicking on the link below. You can also watch/hear every competitor on live stream by clicking on this link here. The competition starts in just a few hours, and we will be hearing around half of the competitors today. I hope you find it interesting!
There are some tips and tricks on keeping costs down while renovating your home on a budget. In this article we’ll discuss 3 tips to save money on home improvements, including: updating your high-energy appliances, reducing supply costs and hiring a contractor.
Updating Your High Energy Appliances
In a similar vein, you’ll get the most bang for your home improvement buck if you upgrade inefficient appliances in your home. The top energy suckers in the home are: heating systems, air conditioning, hot water heaters, dehumidifiers, and refrigerators, according to Energy.gov.
There are easy ways to adjust the energy usage of these appliances, such as installing a programmable thermostat and running appliances at night. At some point, though, you’ll have to decide between repairing (or hacking) your home appliance or replacing it. Source:LifeHacker
Reducing Supply Costs
Sign up for a tool library subscription. These cooperatives provide low-cost rentals or free check out to people who pay $25 to $100 for a yearly subscription. You can save money on tools that you won’t use often, like tree pruning saws, apple cider presses, string trimmers and more.
To find out if there’s a tool library in your town, go to Wikipedia and type in “List of tool-lending libraries.” They will give you a list by country and state. -Look for floor model sales. Each year, your local hardware, home improvement, cabinet and furniture stores replace their floor models. They usually sell those models for a small percentage of what they are charging for new projects. -Buy remnants on smaller projects. Carpet, tile or brick remnants are those that were left over after someone else’s large job. Make sure to measure your square footage needs before you buy. -Keep an eye out for tools at garage sales. Most tools stand up to a lot of wear and tear, and an older, sturdier tool might serve you better than a new model. Search the classified ads for garage sales that feature tools. -Rent tools that you will only need once in a while. For example, a pressure washer, heat gun or carpet cleaner can be rented for as little as $25 for a few hours, and the maintenance will be performed by the rental shop. -Check the “oops” section of the home improvement or paint store. These are colors that were improperly mixed or that the customer didn’t like. Furniture painting and one-room paint jobs can often be done with paint that has been reduced to as little as $5 per gallon. -Look for building supply auctions. Search the Internet for these special events, where building supplies are sold at a fraction of the price. Items may be scratched, dented or just the result of a shipping mistake. Source:wikiHow
Hiring a Contractor
Though the practice is controversial among the trades, some contractors will offer consulting and mentoring services to skilled do–it–yourselfers on an hourly basis. Chicago–area builder Ted Welch charges $150 per hour for such coaching, with a two–hour minimum commitment. “The most satisfied clients tend to be those who have good manual dexterity, who realize that skills need to be practiced in order to be perfected, and who are willing to risk making a few mistakes and then learn from them,” he says. Sometimes, things you’ve heard or read about just aren’t true. In this short post we’ll discuss some of the most common myths about jewelry.
Below are 3 common jewelry myths:
Gold Comes in a Variety of Colours
While these colors are commonly referred to as gold, the only true gold is yellow. Colored gold is actually a mixed metal compound called an "alloy", made by mixing pure gold with iron, silver, platinum, copper or aluminum creating the various colors often used in jewelry. In fact, all yellow gold, with the exception of 24 karat gold, are also alloys since they're mixed with other metals in different quantities. Source:SheKnows
Real Gold Can Be Determined Through Biting We all have heard that you can tell if the gold is real by biting it. They say that gold is a soft metal and if you bite it hard enough, you will see teeth marks in it. Actually, there are more metals that as soft as gold and have the same color. If you trust this myth you can one day buy a different metal instead of gold! Source:LadiesTalks
Diamonds Are the Most Rare and Expensive Stone
Actually, diamonds are not the rarest gemstone, and though they are arguably the most popular, they aren't always the most expensive either. There are a few different factors that impact gemstone cost, and two of those are supply and demand. The diamond market is so sophisticated that if the demand for diamonds starts to taper off, some diamond mines will artificially hold off the supply which creates the illusion they are more rare than they are.
Other stones are not nearly as dependent on the market and command high prices because they actually are extremely rare. Some of those include alexandrite, rubies over 3 carats, and finely colored aquamarine. Source:Jewelry.About

Finding the appropriate practice tool for a specific issue can, as we all know, be a matter of trial and error. When all the usual methods have been exhausted or have perhaps already been overused, it’s time to experiment with new ideas and find a fresh approach in order to nail that awkward passage.
Recently, I’ve been working with a couple of students who are both preparing Mozart’s Sonata K. 311 in D major. The first movement can be deceptive, with many rapid passages containing unforgiving twists and turns in the right hand particularly. Changing fingers at speed can be a major challenge for many, especially during the trills, which whilst look similar, in fact require different fingering depending on the succeeding note patterns.
There are many ways to finger an ornament, but copious hand rotations, or thumbs set under or over the hand often need a different practice regime, so that fingers are literally programmed to play the pattern accurately every time. If this doesn’t happen, then hesitations or a slowing down (or destabilising) of the tempo may occur. Here’s a notorious spot for some (bars 35 – 36):
It’s the second time this trill appears (first time is at bar 31), and the material following the ornament takes a different turn (than that after the first time), hence the unexpected finger change at the end (turning the hand over the thumb to play a 2nd finger), which can sometimes upset the flow (the following is only a suggested trill interpretation):
Here, I normally suggest applying many different touches (non-legato, staccato etc.), followed by different rhythms (dotted rhythms, triplet figures and the like), and a whole array of accents (I love using accents for practising purposes), as well as playing in various octaves around the keyboard (I could go on here, but you get the picture!). However, occasionally further detailed work is necessary.
This is when we turn to the repetition method. A successful ornament demands strong independent fingers; ones which will work very quickly, cleanly, and rhythmically. If trills are becoming sluggish, slower than necessary, or notes are not fully sounding or are unequal, try the following suggestion.
The ornament must be isolated and taken out of context. Banish any sense of rhythm or pulse and just focus on the notes, working at the right hand. Start by playing the pattern in double notes. Follow this with triplets:
And finally you could try playing four semiquavers per note! Make sure you use the fingers with which you will play the ornament. Always practice slowly to begin with and, most importantly, free of any tension. With this in mind, you may need to ‘bounce’ the hand after each note (at first), especially at the beginning of each beat (to free the wrist), so that it doesn’t ‘lock up’.
Now experiment with accents; start with one on the first beat of every group, then on the second beat. Follow this with accents on beats 1 and 3 of every note group (for the triplet group). Add speed gradually until you can play quite fast and with a warm sound. Ensure each note is completely even tonally and rhythmically (whilst you are not yet adhering to the pulse, the notes must still be equally played). You could also try using dotted rhythms on each repetition, whether two, three or four semiquavers are being played.
Once you’ve mastered this, return to playing the ornament as written. Lighten your finger touch and, hopefully, the practice repetitions will enable an even trill (fingering, notes, rotations) with all notes clearly articulated and fully sounding. Try now to combine the trill with the left hand.
You might require a fair amount of practice in order to become acquainted with the feeling of repeating the notes with flexibility (the wrist must always be free of tension and ideally should move after every quaver beat, albeit imperceptibly). Playing the repetitions with the left hand semiquaver pattern might also be beneficial (at very slow speeds), enabling perfect placing of each note.
Repeating notes in a pattern can be successfully applied to all tricky passages and ones which combine both hands too; if there is a unison pattern of quavers or semiquavers, this may be a useful way to help coordination. Happy practising!
Here’s Daniel Barenboim’s interpretation of Mozart’s Sonata in D major K. 311:
Taking photos of jewelry can be very difficult. However, knowing more about some of the common mistakes can help you to avoid them and get that perfect photograph.
Here are 3 common jewelry photography mistakes to avoid:
Poor Focus
It’s always best to do this when you’re shooting. If you need one shot to tell the whole story of a piece, you will want to set your camera for maximum depth of field. If you’re showing more than one image, as on Etsy, you can afford to get creative and sharpen just the forefront on at least one shot.
Chances are, your image will need a little sharpening after the fact. Most basic photo-editing software allows you to do this pretty easily – but don’t over-sharpen or your photo will start to look grainy. Source:JewelryMakingDaily
Busy Background
The primary purpose of photographing jewelry is to showcase its appeal and its intricacies that can attract buyers. However, this is where many jewelry photographers go wrong. They tend to load up the background with unnecessary additions and props. Sometimes, the background is also perceived as an opportunity to showcase other products. This is a major mistake.
Making the background busy with other elements will only take the focus away from the piece of jewelry you are trying to photograph. Keep the background clean and simple. A white or a light gray background are quite popular for photographing jewelry. While a light colored background is preferred, a black background can also be quite attractive depending on the product and light conditions.
Keep in mind that you should pick a style for a certain product and stick to it while capturing it from different angles. Also, avoid using props since these tend to distract the buyer. Source:LeraBlog
Reflections
Let’s face it—jewelry is shiny, and while sparkle is great, camera lens reflections and white highlight spots visible on your jewelry is not. Take great care not to create these distractions on your jewelry while photographing them. If you’re having trouble with reflections, try changing the jewelry’s position, or yours, in relation to the light source. You’ll probably need to zoom in to closely examine the product to ensure that you haven’t captured any reflections. Source:Pixelz

Gold jewelry typically carries a special significance for its owner. Whether the item carries sentimental value, monetary value, or both, it is only natural that you will want to keep it looking its best. In this short post we’ll cover 4 tips for cleaning gold jewelry.
Tip #1:
1. Soak jewelry in soap solution - Add a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid to a bowl filled with two cups of warm water. Drop your gold pieces into the solution and let them soak for about 15 minutes.
2. Scrub the dirt away - Lift a piece of jewelry out of the solution and gently scrub it with a soft-bristle toothbrush to remove any dirt lodged in nooks and crannies.
3. Rinse in warm water -Swish the piece around in a bowl of warm water to remove the soapy residue.
4. Blot dry with a soft cloth - Using a soft cloth, dry your jewelry thoroughly and buff it a little to bring back the shine. Source:RealSimple
Tip #2:
For untarnished jewelry, mix a few drops of mild dish detergent with warm water, and scrub with a soft-bristle toothbrush. If it's tarnished, mix a few drops of ammonia into soapy water, submerge the jewelry and carefully brush with a soft-bristle toothbrush. Rinse it with lukewarm water and allow it to dry.
Avoiding chlorine is key to keeping gold jewelry looking good. "Chlorine at high temperatures, like in a hot tub, can permanently damage or discolor your gold jewelry," says Castoro. Source:WomansDay
Tip #3:
To clean gold jewellery, which has gemstones, don't soak it in water (water can get trapped and rust or discolour the stones or make them loose). Use a clean, dry cloth and gently rub the gemstones. Use a separate damp cloth to rinse the jewellery. Once done, keep the pieces upside down and let them dry. Source:TimesOfIndia
Tip #4:
Use this method with care. It may scratch gold and silver. Also the chemicals that clean your teeth may leave a film on stones and gold. If in doubt, try one of the alternative, gentler methods instead.
Mix a small quantity of toothpaste and water. Squeeze about an inch of toothpaste into a bowl (or your palm!) and mix with a tablespoon or two of water to make a light paste. As a mild abrasive, toothpaste is good for loosening up grime that's accumulated on your favorite pieces of gold jewelry without scratching the jewelry.
● You can use this method for frequently-worn gold items that need a quick clean or when you don't have access to other cleaning materials (like when you're traveling.)
Scrub with a (soft-bristled) toothbrush. Use an old, soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste to gently scrub off grime. The toothpaste can be applied to a cloth to hand polish an item as well. If you're seeing scratches on your jewelry, it's probably the toothbrush, not the toothpaste - use as soft of brush as possible.
● Alternatively, simply scrub with undiluted toothpaste. This, however, can be harder to rinse out of small crevices in your jewelry.
Rinse generously in clean water. Just like when you rinse after brushing your teeth, you should rinse your jewelry to remove any loosened dirt or grime! Source:wikiHow

With a couple of games played and precisely zero goals scored or conceded, the men's Brazilian national side have most definitely struggled to click into gear at the Rio Olympics so far. Former France and Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier has warned that Paul Pogba will find it hard to live up to his price tag and told L'Equipe that Manchester United has become "a factory" rather than a club. Pogba, 23, finally completed an £89.3 million (€105m) move from Juventus back to Manchester United in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Houllier, though, feels that there is no guarantee that the France international will be an instant hit at the club he walked out on in...
ESPN FC correspondent Paolo Bandini suggests that Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has never needed a 20-goal striker. Oscar says he hopes Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will keep faith with the 4-3-3 system that saw his side put four goals past Werder Bremen. For much of preseason Conte, whose side begin their Premier League campaign against West Ham on Monday, has used two strikers in a 4-4-2/4-2-4 system. Renato Sanches might be a bargain, considering how much he starred at Euro 2016. Fifty years after making a splash in their debut tournament, Portugal ended their wait for international silverware when they lifted the 2016 European Championship trophy last month in Paris. In 1966, a Eusebio-inspired Seleção reached the semifinals, on the back of which the mythical Number 9 was famously declared "national patrimony" by Portugal's then dictator, Antonio Salazar, and prohibited from leaving Benfica, much to the player's chagrin. ESPN FC's Gab Marcotti, Steve Nicol and Craig Burley talk what's next for Manchester United now that Paul Pogba is in the fold. Twenty years after Newcastle United paid £15 million ($23.4m at the time) to acquire Alan Shearer from Blackburn Rovers, an English club has again broken the world record transfer fee. Paul Pogba's move from Juventus to Manchester United will cost at least six times that, which is quite an increase over two decades. Because there's very little transparency in football, it's tough to put an exact number on what United paid for his services once you factor in agent commissions which often get...
